TL;DR — Human networks have a measured limit and a layered shape: a few close people, then wider rings of weaker ties, topping out around 150. Being online did not raise that limit. Your contact list, though, grows forever, so the gap between the names you store and the people you actually keep gets wider every year. The research says what falls into that gap is worth a lot. This note is the evidence, with sources you can click.
Most people talk to the same five to ten people, and store several hundred more. That is the observation this whole series is built on, and it is not a hunch — it is one of the better-measured facts in social science.
The ceiling is not a metaphor
Human groups do not come in arbitrary sizes. Analysing human grouping patterns across a wide range of datasets, Zhou, Sornette, Hill and Dunbar found a discrete hierarchy of group sizes with a preferred scaling ratio close to three — people spontaneously form groups “of preferred sizes organized in a geometrical series approximating 3-5, 9-15, 30-45”. Each ring is roughly three times the one inside it, and the innermost ring is very small.
The outer boundary has been measured too, in a study whose method I have always liked for its ordinariness: Christmas cards. Hill and Dunbar totalled the households people actually sent cards to and found maximum network size averaged 153.5 individuals, with a mean of 124.9 for those explicitly contacted. Frequency of contact within that network was driven by emotional closeness and genetic relatedness on one side, and distance and circumstance on the other.
Why a ceiling at all? Because relationships are expensive. Dunbar’s summary of the field puts it bluntly: friendship is the single most important factor influencing our health, well-being and happiness, and creating and maintaining friendships is “extremely costly” in both time and cognitive effort. You are not failing to keep up with 400 people. Nobody keeps up with 400 people.
Your contact list is not your network
The sharpest finding here is about how attention gets distributed, and how stubborn that pattern is.
Saramäki and colleagues tracked mobile calls and survey data over 18 months for people going through a major life transition — leaving school for university or work. They found that individuals display a distinctive and robust “social signature”: a persistent pattern of how interaction is distributed across the people they know. The people changed. The shape did not. As new members entered the network, “some old network members either are replaced or receive fewer calls, preserving the overall distribution of calls across network members.”
Put that in plain terms. You only have so much time, so when someone new becomes close, someone else quietly gets less of you. Nobody decides this. It is just what happens when a life has more people in it than hours.
Being online did not raise the ceiling
The obvious objection: surely modern communication fixed this. Messaging is free, everyone is reachable, the constraint should have lifted.
It did not. Dunbar tested this across two UK surveys, each a national sample. The result: online networks are about the same size and shape as offline ones, inner rings included. The conclusion was that “there is a cognitive constraint on the size of social networks that even the communication advantages of online media are unable to overcome.”
In plain terms, the limit is in us, not in the technology. And real relationships still need face-to-face time now and then to survive.
So technology changed the storage and nothing else. What a person can hold stayed the same. The list became endless. Every year the gap between those two numbers grows, and everything in that gap is a relationship that exists on your phone and nowhere else.
What is sitting in the gap
Here is the part worth building for. The people you have drifted away from are not dead weight.
Dormant ties are unusually valuable. Levin, Walter and Murnighan had hundreds of executives reconnect with people they had not spoken to in three years or more and ask them for advice on a live work problem. Their finding: dormant ties are as valuable — and often more valuable — than current ties, with insights that were more novel and more efficient to obtain, and a pool of helpful dormant contacts that was “surprisingly deep”.
Weak ties do measurable work. In the largest causal test of the idea, Rajkumar and colleagues analysed randomised experiments on LinkedIn’s recommendation algorithm across more than 20 million people over five years, during which 2 billion new ties and 600,000 new jobs were created. Weak ties increased job mobility — but not linearly. The relationship was an inverted U, with moderately weak ties producing the most mobility, and the effect varied by industry.
And we are systematically wrong about reaching out. Across experiments with more than 5,900 participants, Liu and colleagues found that people consistently underestimate how much others appreciate an unexpected call, text or email, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in July 2022. Recipients weighted the surprise of being contacted far more heavily than senders expected. The message you did not send because it felt like an imposition would have landed better than you thought.
Three findings, one shape. The value sits with the people nobody keeps up with. What stops you is not money or effort. Nothing reminds you — and when something does, you assume you would be bothering them.
This is not a soft problem
The stakes are not sentimental. Holt-Lunstad, Smith and Layton’s meta-analysis across 148 studies and 308,849 participants found a 50% increased likelihood of survival for participants with stronger social relationships.
In June 2025 the World Health Organization’s Commission on Social Connection reported that 1 in 6 people worldwide is affected by loneliness, which is linked to an estimated 100 deaths every hour — more than 871 000 deaths annually. The 2023 US Surgeon General’s advisory reported that about one-in-two adults in America reported experiencing loneliness, with a mortality impact “similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day”.
And the inner rings are thinning. Surveying Americans in May 2021, the Survey Center on American Life found 12 percent reported having no close friends, against 3 percent in 1990, while those reporting ten or more close friends fell from 33 percent to 13 percent.
What I built from this
Four conclusions came straight out of this literature and into the product.
Stop treating the list as the network. A contact list sorted alphabetically is a filing cabinet. What matters is which relationships are real, which have gone quiet, and which one is worth an hour this week.
The help people need is a reminder, not an introduction. Most of the value in the research sits in relationships you already have and have let go quiet. Meeting new people matters too, but it is the smaller half of the problem, and it gets almost all of the attention.
Small nudges, not a dashboard for your social life. If people really can only hold a few close ties, then a product that pushes you to tend 300 relationships is working against how people are built. The honest goal is a few more good relationships, not a longer list.
Towards the room, not the screen. Online networks never grew past offline ones. That is why, when Aura helps someone who is feeling alone, it ends at a place, an event, or a person you will actually sit across from.
Your phone can hold four thousand people. You can hold about a hundred and fifty, and you are close to maybe nine. The work is not remembering more names. It is noticing, in time, which of the nine you are quietly losing.
