A relationship is not one thing, so it does not get one score.
Someone can be the best person in the world to start a company with and the wrong person to spend a quiet Sunday with. Someone can be a ten-year friendship that has never once been useful at work, and that is not a fault in the friendship.
Squash all of that into a single number and you throw away the only part worth knowing. So Aura looks at a relationship seven ways at once, and lets those views disagree.
The seven
Once you and another person are connected through a direct chat, Aura can read that relationship along seven lines:
- Friendship — trust, ease, caring about each other, enjoying each other, staying in touch.
- Romance — whether there is romantic potential here, going by what you have actually told it.
- Building together — could you own something risky together: the direction, the decisions, the responsibility.
- Working together — the day-to-day of getting things done: talking clearly, being reliable, skills that fit together.
- Growth and guidance — learning from each other, honest feedback, respect, healthy limits, in either direction.
- Shared experiences — plans, hobbies, trips, energy, and whether the practical side actually works.
- Everyday companionship — comfort, steadiness, being around. Ordinary life, not just outings.
Above those sits a short summary of the relationship in a few sentences. Below them is one private note: something specific Aura noticed, and one natural next step. Not “keep in touch more” — the actual next thing.
All of it is private to you. The other person does not see it, is not told it exists, and gets no message saying Aura looked. This is a tool for understanding your own relationships. It is not a rating system pointed at other people.
What it reads, and what it will not guess
The read comes from your own relationship with that person: how the two of you actually talk, what you have told Aura about them, who and what you have in common, what you call the relationship, and any notes you have made.
Part 3 is the evidence for why that is the right place to look. In short: what happens between two people tells you far more than what either person is like.
What Aura will not do matters just as much, and each refusal costs something.
It does not diagnose. Not your personality, not theirs, not anyone’s mental health. It does not tell you what the other person secretly feels, because it does not have their side, and making that up would be the most popular lie in this category.
And when there is not enough to go on for one of the seven, Aura says so instead of inventing a confident number. The alternative is software that makes up a score about your marriage.
That gap closes on its own, which is the part I like. The more real history you two have, the more there is to read, and the better the read gets. A connection made yesterday gives Aura less to work with than one with two years of conversation behind it. That is how it should be.
Relationships move, so the read moves
A single score on a single day is a claim about the future, and the research on confident relationship predictions is not kind to those.
So Aura keeps a record instead. When you ask it to take another look, the new read is saved next to the older ones. What you can see is the direction: where a friendship was in March, where it is now, whether the working relationship you were worried about has recovered.
Your first read is free. Asking for a fresh one later costs Nuggets, because it is real work each time. Prices live on the plans page, not in an essay.
Reminders you asked for, and none you didn’t
Aura keeps the small things that come out of your own one-to-one chats — a birthday, some news, the thing you said you would ask about next time — so it can hand them back when they are useful instead of six months later.
For people who matter, you can turn on a quiet check-in for that one person: Off, Occasionally, Regularly, Frequently. In plain terms: a nudge if a month goes by, or two weeks, or one. Off is how it starts. You choose it per person, and you can mute it.
Nothing here scans your friendships and decides you are lonely. Aura does not read that into your silence and does not arrive with an unasked-for plan for your social life. When you ask, that is when it gets to work.
Meeting someone new
The other half of this is people you have not met yet, and it runs on stricter rules.
Aura only considers people who have said they are open to being found. It leaves out anyone you are already connected to. It respects a block from either side. And it requires the fit to work both ways — a match that is great for you and mediocre for them is not a match, it is pushing you at someone who is not interested. So one-sided matches get pushed down, not shown.
It also leaves room for people outside your usual pattern. A system that only ever shows you more of what you already like will slowly narrow your life, so some of what comes back is there to widen it.
I am not going to publish what is underneath: which signals are used, how they are weighed, how they are combined. That is the real work here. A published formula is also an invitation to game it, and a matching system that can be gamed turns into a marketing channel within a week.
When there is someone worth asking about, Aura can quietly check whether they are open to it. No message is sent to them. Nothing about you is shared. You decide what happens next.
Coming: two Auras talking to each other directly, so the people who matter to you hear the big things — a loss, a move, a new baby — from your own assistant instead of from a feed. You would approve it each time, and set how much can be shared for each relationship. The controls are designed and the connection between Auras is being built. You cannot use it today.
What this is for
None of this is trying to be a social network. There is no feed of your relationships, no ranking of your friends, nothing to perform for anyone.
It is closer to what a very observant friend would do, if that friend had a perfect memory and wanted nothing from you. Notice that you and your brother have not spoken since the funeral. Notice that the person who keeps showing up for you has never been thanked. Then say so quietly, to you, while there is still time to do something about it.
Computers got very good at reminding you about meetings. This is the same idea, pointed at the part of your life you will actually remember.
